🐎 BHM: Surviving the arctic tundra as a Broke Horse Mom

Hi Reader,

By the time this hits your inbox, we’ll be about 11 days deep into 20-degree weather here in Virginia. Schools closed. Roads iced over. Water buckets frozen solid. A whole situation.

I had an interview planned for this week, but honestly? It didn’t feel as helpful as talking about what’s getting us through this stretch of winter barn life.

In today’s episode of Broke Horse Moms, I’m sharing:

  • The clothes that are actually working at the barn
  • Why gas station hot chocolate has become a parenting tool
  • The winter survival tips other horse moms swear by
  • How we’re helping our kids stay connected to their horses even when riding isn’t an option

It’s not polished or aspirational, it’s real life, frozen fingers, and doing the best we can.

As promised, here are links to some of the items I mentioned in today's episode (affiliate links, when I have access to them):

If you’ve got a winter barn hack, comfort ritual, or “you’re not alone” story, hit reply or send a DM. I’d love to share more community 'wisdom' in upcoming episodes.

Our Road to Pony Finals

It's starting to get real-ish, friends. Quick overview:

  • Goal: Attend (and be competitive) at Pony Jumper Finals in August 2026 in Lexington, KY
  • To do this: Chloe and Phoebe need to compete in 2 rated shows, a total of 4 classes, and not get disqualified. Basically, there's no 'performance' requirement, just participating.
  • Deadlines: Qualifying show must be completed by June 15, 2026 and application deadline is July.

We've booked airbnb's for the two rated shows and I'm hoping to get our place for Kentucky booked in the next week or so. Once the ice thaws, they'll get back to their regular rhythm of riding, complete with a 'training calendar' Chloe has crafted. ❤️

As always, thanks for being a fellow Broke Horse Mom.

You've got this, mama!

Hi Reader, If you’ve been anywhere near horse social media this week, you’ve probably seen people talking about Dover Saddlery’s closures and liquidation sales. I've had teen girls begging for one last trip to our most local shop, moms asking when the 20% off will jump to 30% off, and myself...well, I've been remembering all the trips to Dover with Chloe and my mother-in-law. CORE memories, for sure. While we could all spend hours recounting the rites of passage our kids have celebrated at...

Hi Reader, Today's episode with David Reichert, founder of UDJC (United Dressage and Jumping Club), includes a few hot takes. Exhibit A: within the first two minutes he told me Pony Finals was a waste of time and money. 😳 So, this is one you'll love to listen to. David grew up in Germany’s equestrian system and has some VERY strong opinions about the way kids are being developed in the U.S. horse world. Specifically: Why he thinks horse shows often reward expensive horses instead of good...

Hi Reader, A few weeks ago, I shared with you that we were heading to our first rated show of the season as a qualifier for Pony Finals. We made it there unscathed, aside from a very stressful wasp incident in the car on the way there (think: teenager driving, my sitting shotgun, 2 teens in the back, one of whom is VERY afraid of flying, stinging insects AND a wasp in the car). Chloe and her friends and the horses settled in nicely on Wednesday, competed well on Thursday and Friday and...
