🐎 BHM: Behind-the-scenes of your local horse show

Hi Reader,

You know that moment at a horse show when you’re standing at the ring, coffee (or mimosa) in hand, pacing back and forth until your kid's round is over (oh...is that just me??) and possibly doing the math of the show in your head?

Yeah. Same.

This week on the podcast, I sat down with Kelly Gannon, adult amateur and volunteer for the Central Virginia Show Jumping Association (CVSJA) to understand what actually goes into running a local horse show.

Spoiler: ribbons DO NOT cost 25¢ like I always thought.

We talked about:

  • What local show associations are and how they differ from rated shows
  • The real costs behind putting on a show
  • Why volunteer and sponsor support matters more than we think
  • How local shows are the pipeline for the riding industry
  • The thing we're doing that Kelly thinks 'won't make me many friends' 🤣

💪🏻 Why and How to Help Your Local Show Association

Truth is, sometimes it's hard for us as parents to even show up as spectators to lessons and shows. So, it’s naturally even harder to show up as active community members.

But, it is possible and it does matter.

Whether you show up as a volunteer donating your time and/or skills or whether you donate money to the organization (outside of show fees 🤣), I'd encourage you to find a way to support your local show organization. My inbox is open to help brainstorm!

Here's the link to support CVSJA, the show jumping association mentioned in the episode: https://www.cvsja.com/sponsorshippayment

*You don't need to be a business owner to donate, you can choose any amount, AND CVSJA is a 501c3 organization.

🎙️ What Do YOU Want to Hear??

I'd love to hear the topics and/or interviews you want to hear on the podcast.

Thanks to a note from one listener, I've got an episode on IEA in the works.

I'm also working on interviewing a college riding coach, chatting with a former groom (on how we can help our kids at shows without royally annoying them!), and more.

BUT...I want to hear from YOU! Shoot me back an email and let me know (I'll happily give your Broke Horse Mom credit on the episode!).

As always, thanks for being a fellow Broke Horse Mom.

You've got this, mama!

Hi Reader, If you’ve been anywhere near horse social media this week, you’ve probably seen people talking about Dover Saddlery’s closures and liquidation sales. I've had teen girls begging for one last trip to our most local shop, moms asking when the 20% off will jump to 30% off, and myself...well, I've been remembering all the trips to Dover with Chloe and my mother-in-law. CORE memories, for sure. While we could all spend hours recounting the rites of passage our kids have celebrated at...

Hi Reader, Today's episode with David Reichert, founder of UDJC (United Dressage and Jumping Club), includes a few hot takes. Exhibit A: within the first two minutes he told me Pony Finals was a waste of time and money. 😳 So, this is one you'll love to listen to. David grew up in Germany’s equestrian system and has some VERY strong opinions about the way kids are being developed in the U.S. horse world. Specifically: Why he thinks horse shows often reward expensive horses instead of good...

Hi Reader, A few weeks ago, I shared with you that we were heading to our first rated show of the season as a qualifier for Pony Finals. We made it there unscathed, aside from a very stressful wasp incident in the car on the way there (think: teenager driving, my sitting shotgun, 2 teens in the back, one of whom is VERY afraid of flying, stinging insects AND a wasp in the car). Chloe and her friends and the horses settled in nicely on Wednesday, competed well on Thursday and Friday and...
