Am I the only who, when my kiddo started riding, assumed the only decisions to be made would be around things like schedules, budgets, and maybe when she got her first pair of tall boots.

I had no idea that, before long, I’d be making decisions about trainers, horses, safety, horse shows, tack, and thousands of dollars in expenses in a sport I barely understood.

Somewhere along the way, I had to figure out where my job as the parent ended and where my trainer’s job began.

• Who decides when your child is ready to move up?
• Who decides which horse they should ride?
• Who decides if they should get back on after a scary fall?
• Who decides what tack they need, whether they should work at the barn, or even what classes they should show in?

This week’s podcast episode tackles exactly those questions.

I sat down with Jen Barker and Karen Tanner from The Scope Podcast for a conversation about the parent-trainer partnership and how horse moms can build trust without giving up their voice.

One of my favorite takeaways was that trust doesn’t mean blindly following advice. It means having enough communication and understanding to know why decisions are being made.
